I started reading Head On because I was curious where the series would go after Lock In. Right after Recursion, I was hungry for more Sci Fic, and this seemed like a safe option.
One thing I noticed was both the books had a distinguished antagonist who you would have guessed would be the bad guy. Even after bouncing back and forth with numerous characters, it finally settled on the person who you initially suspected. The story points and screams at you who it is while at the same time urging you to consider other leads of who might be the one. This ruined the story for me because I hoped to be surprised, and I was somewhat disappointed. But overall, I liked the story. It was not as entertaining as the first one, but it was a solidly enjoyable story.
We are again introduced to Chris and Vann and their life as detectives. The novel begins right where the previous one had left it. This time we are introduced to a game called Hilketa, where the players who are Haden’s in their threeps try to rip the head of one selected player and score a goal with the head. For the first time, there is the death of a player, which should be theoretically impossible. Chirs and Vann investigate the murder, and the series of bizarre events are they unfold trying to figure out who is behind the whole incident.

2.5 out of 5 stars

Let me start out by saying I don't think this is a bad book. Furthermore, there were parts of Head On that I enjoyed and that actually gave me hope of finally "getting into" this book. But, unfortunately, it just didn't do much for me—the story, the characters, the writing... none of this went above average, hence the 2.5 out of 5 rating. It was just... OK. The idea of Head On is definitely much better than the execution, especially considering how interesting Lock In was.

Even better than the first one- though I may be biased since they introduce a cat character and spend time in Philadelphia this time. Exciting, fun lil mysteries, cool world that is only becoming more developed. And like all Scalzi novels the last third of it I read in one setting because I needed to know what happened next. The characters are cool but not corny, it was action packed, a real summer blockbuster of a book. I felt the ending got a little scooby dooish with exposition, but overall was a fan of the novel. And dang you could probably read just this and not the first one (Lock In) and be fine (though I’d suggest reading both still).
