I really enjoyed reading this, I enjoyed the insight into Hamish’s games and the emphasis on propaganda and how his experiences shaped the character we knew in the original trilogy. 

I thought it was really interesting how the little bit we knew of his games from the original series

was a  heavily edited version created by the capital to be taken out of its original context, essentially rewriting history.

  Very interesting masterful writing. 

 I don’t think I could ever recommend this as an actual literal prequel though, it definitely needs to be read in the order it was written. But phenomenal writing, highly recommend!

read this book to start off my vacation & hopefully end a reading slump, and that was a good choice :,) i was hit w nostalgia as i was sucked back into the hunger games universe. esp w everything going on recently, some of the themes from this story hits a little harder, though i understand and agree with some of the criticisms from other reviews.

I devoured the hunger games books as a teen but don’t really gravitate to YA or dystopia now, so this was just fine for me. It did a good job of doing what it set out to do, but if my book club hadn’t picked this I’m not sure I’d have read it.

Collins writes this book so amazingly that it makes TBOSAS seem like a high schooler's first book. The drama and symbolism is dropping from the first page, you can feel Haymitch's hatred and disgust (and eventually self-loathing and trauma) in every word he says ans feels.

Well done Collins.

Oh my god. I felt like I was 12 and reading the hunger games for the first time again. I knew what was gonna happen but I didn't know it was gonna happen like that!!!!. It was a slow start but towards the end it hit you with the sucker punch of emotions that completely shattered he especially with the epilogue and how haymich talked about katniss. Was broke my heart completely at wellie's death. Fuck it hurt man
