3.75🌟 i liked kai&banks more than the first book but the dynamic between banks and damon was so icky to me!! i am interested to see how he gets redeemed i've never really read a real villain redemption arc before. i also think we needed more of kai's prison backstory and healing from that but i did like the insight we got, banks was a very interesting character too

sidenote i also absolutely hate how sapphic sex is used as a ploy to make the mmcs want the fmcs and if that continues im not going to be happy it makes me feel so gross.

I’ll forever be a Kai girlie.

This book had so much depth to it. The plot twists had me on the edge of my seat, and the darker topics made me really sit back and think on certain characters and how I feel about them.
I keep waiting to be annoyed by a main female character, as I usually am, but it’s just not happening. Rika, Alex, and Banks have my heart just as much as the boys do. ♡︎

Also.. closet scene in chapter 22. That is all.

• “People will think what they want to think, not because they believe they are right, but because it’s in their nature to maintain that they are.”
• “—I’m the only man whose attention you should be trying to get, and baby, you got it years ago while wearing another man’s clothes. So you can imagine how fucking beautiful you are to me right now wearing mine.”
• “Rika is my earliest memory, and I’ve loved her forever. The sun rises with her. It always has.”
• “—when you’re in the thick of abuse and still live with the torment in your head every day, it’s a little different. No one handles it. They just fake it better. How else do you cope with the terrible shit you’ve been through?”
• “Territorial is fine when it’s in the bedroom. It’s not fine when it keeps someone you’re supposed to love from living a life.”
• “When someone else misbehaves, it’s black-and-white, isn’t it? We judge, and we condemn, but when we do it, it’s a gray area all of a sudden.”

Listen, I have already read Corrupt (which I don't want to talk about), and the only thing that I liked in it was secondary characters. And Kai, well, I'm a sucker for strong silent types.
Well, either my expectations after Corrupt were so low, or, yes, Hideaway was so much better, I really don't know. I still hate Michael and Rika and although I understand that they are important for the series development in general, I didn't like them spoiling the story.

Kai, yeah, is definitely my (imaginary) soul mate. Yes, he is all over the place but, I could forgive and forget most of his discretions. But, Banks girl, how many times have I just wanted to slap her senseless??? Again, what's up with Douglas writing so not-likable FMC??? Luckily, she had her own redemption part (
When she beat the crap out of Rika 😈
).

Will har nog blivit min favorit.

Kai and Banks Are Crazy Hot

Quote:📖
“We’re only ever good, because there are consequences.”

Thoughts: 💡
This was my second read through and I forgot how much I loved this book. Angsty romance, dark themes, and taboo smut scenes make this series iconic. The schenagains Kai and Banks get up to are crazy hot with an intense push and pull relationship.
Berkley is re-releasing the first three books in the series and I’m incredibly excited to read them again.

Writing Mechanics: ✍️
The writing in this series is designed to be dramatic, and it works. The book is told in first person present tense dual POV, but it hops timelines to show you flashbacks and help you piece through the history to understand the story. The smut scenes are pretty wild and if you don’t like it a bit twisted, taboo, and graphic then this one probably isn’t for you.
I personally love these characters, they’re completely broken with tragic pasts and some really dark ideas, but they pull together to be one another’s life lines. I think the reason I hated Nightfall so much is because I love these characters so deeply. This book and the others in the series paint the characters as extremely morally gray but with a deep ability to forgive, after meeting out a healthy dose of revenge.

Fun Bits:
⚜️ Wild Secrets
⚜️ Painful Pasts
⚜️ Morally Grey Characters
⚜️ Wonderful Side Characters
⚜️ Standalone Romance, Series Long Plot
⚜️ Super Hot Smut In Some Taboo Places

Important Note:
This is book 2, this is a standalone romance, but the plot stretches over the whole series.

I love Kai and Banks's relationship.
I didn't particularly appreciate their story reflected on Damon
I love Pen's writing in this book.
