This is the sequel to Mr Mercedes and, you could say, has the same protagonist, a retired detective, Bill Hodges. But really, you won't see that much of Hodges. He didn't even show up for, almost, the first hundred and fifty pages. The real protagonist is Pete Saubers. But before we get to him, we have to talk about the antagonist.

Morris Bellamy is a crazy big fan of the protagonist, Jimmy Gold, of a book series. Emphasis on the "crazy". He felt that the author has treated Jimmy badly and, on finding out that the author had kept writing, maybe about Jimmy, even after his retirement, he proceeded to break into the author's home, steal cash and the unpublished work, and kill him. Morris had to hide the stolen notebooks and was sentenced to life in prison before he got a chance to read them. After thirty-six years, he's back. And he wants what he claims is his.

Pete Saubers found the cash and the notebooks when he was thirteen. He never told anyone, using the money to help his parents in their misfortune after his father was gravely injured by a crazy person driving a stolen Mercedes. At seventeen, he still has the notebooks and Morris is out of prison. That's a big problem.

Morris Bellamy is scary. He's not the most spry or intimidated guy. What makes him scary is his craziness. You don't know what he might do, and he's willing to go as far as it takes to get to those notebooks. Normally, you wouldn't worry too much about a sixty-year-old man. But Morris's unpredictability makes you worry. You never know when he's going to kill someone. Great villain. For the last third of the book, I was on the edge of my seat, freaking out that he was going to kill Pete, and who know how many other people.

Speaking of Pete, he was a surprise. Morris was a smart guy, which only added to what made him scary. But Pete wasn't any less. Pete was a really good kid, cool under stressful situations and so freaking smart. I didn't expect to root for him as much as I did. I liked him more as a protagonist than Bill Hodges.

As for Bill, like I said, he wasn't as present in the novel. He still had a part to play, of course, but it's not one that needs to be talked about, especially if you're avoiding spoilers. This was a middle book, the bridge between the first and third, both of which have Bill as protagonist. But it was a really good middle book. We got a great story, we caught up with the people who survived the first book and we got a glimpse at what to expect from book 3, which I'm eager to read (but not just yet). The ending — holy fuck! — has me very excited to find out what will happen.

Not sure if I am going to continue the Bill Hodgers trilogy. Will read the outsider series ( the outsiders, if it bleeds, Holly )

So let me say firstly, Finders Keepers is a good book.
I’ve scored Finders Keepers lower than I was hoping purely down to the slow start, I love this trilogy mainly because of Bill Hodges and his friends (Holly & Jerome) so when they didn’t pop up for the first 100 pages or, so I wasn’t confident I would enjoy Finders Keepers as much as Mr Mercedes.
That being said, this book has a great ending and when it got going I couldn’t put it down, if the start has been quicker this would easily be a four-star book!
Finders Keepers does a great job at showing how far obsession can push a bad person over the edge causing them to do terrible things, but in their mind things that need to be done.
The antagonist wasn’t up to the Mr Mercedes level in my opinion but the more time spent with him the more he grew on me, this is a good sequel but for me doesn’t live up to Mr Mercedes, luckily End of Watch was brilliant so the series ends well!

Didn't enjoy this one as much as Mr. Mercedes. I didn't find the primary plot to be that engaging and I was kind of annoyed by how long it took to get to Hodges and his crew.

This book is excellent!! I got totally wrapped up in it. For those of you who read Mr. Mercedes…you met the lunatic. In this book, the killer was/is totally unhinged. This book is not creepy crawly clowns or psychotic animals. It’s a detective story. Very well written.
