It's a nice romance! Pretty hot, sweet, fun, and bland.

I adore shy characters in difficult positions being seen, admired, and genuinely not sure what to do with it.  I also  think sunshine characters with underestimated bite are fantastic.  Lovely story.  The only thing I would wish for is that Summer and Elizabeth leaned into something real earlier in their subterfuge. It seems like a natural thing to draw on since there was something real between them already.  Breaking Character was thoughtful, and felt like realistic development of two different peoples feelings for each other.

(listened to audio book from library)

a surprisingly fun read! i found this book on a top ten list for slow-burn lesbian romances and BOY was it slow-burn.

it was (mostly) worth it in the end, though i wish there had been more than one ~spicy~ scene. after all the pining and sexual tension, it was hardly the intense payoff i’d expected but still satisfying and very in-character.

Lee Winter is a great writer. she doesn’t dawdle on unnecessary detail and seems genuinely in tune with current trends and queer media. the references to The 100 (bury your gays, ClexaCon) threw me WAY back to my younger fandom days but it was a welcome levity to the intense emotional plot.

overall a fun and complex story that i really enjoyed for more than just the spice… and the audiobook narrator was STELLAR.

this is literally the best romance novel I've ever read. it's so cute and sexy and fun. the audiobook narration is AMAZING. Bess' voice is just 🥺😭😍. I love romances between actors and fake dating and they communicate so well and slowly build a relationship. And just the honestly they have while fake dating but also being closeted and just ughhh everything. Will def reread many times.
