This was such a fun read. I enjoy retellings in general, and I loved reading an Arthurian retelling from Guinevere's perspective. I'm already looking forward to the rest of the series.

2.5 stars, rounding up. I've yet to find a King Arthur book that I really like. I'll stick to Kiersten White's adult and horror which I do really like.

As I bought this book in an antigue bookshop during my vacation in Rome, I certainly did not expect for it to be such a masterpiece.

This is probably something I have expected from the book Legendborn which is also an Arthurian legends retelling because that book was slightly disappointing for me. I wanted something like the tv series Merlin (which I adore) and that weird love triangle didn't add anything to it. I wanted a good, medieval retelling filled woth magic and the characters that I knew knew which I've received in this book.

The overall plot of this book is so intriguing. At first it felt a bit underwhelming and weird that basically the whole basic plot has already happened before the start of the book (overthrowing Uther, defeating the Dark queen, getting Excalibur, Arthur being allies with Merlin) but then it started to make more sense. And the plot that we've received in this book was so well written and at times I couldn't stop reading!

At times, I have to admit, it felt a bit unbelievable that Arthur has accomplished all of this before he even turned eighteen. But on the other hand, it started to make sense as they book and story progressed because it was set in the Middle ages and at certain scenes you could see that deep down he was still a boy.

I did not expect to be betrayed by Mordred so much. Of course, in the beginning I was a bit unsure of him, knowing his story and being a villain but a part of me started to believe he could be good. I liked his dynamic with Guinevere and how nice he was to her, that way it hurt so much more.

Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
