getting close to the end! just 1/6th left,

can't wait to see what happens next.

who will be the main big bad? robot or thragg?

i guess we shall see.

their kids is cute and so is oliver's girlfriend

the rape was handled well, and it is "nice" to have a male deal with that stuff for once, it is almost a taboo in media.

I love this series. It may be my favorite comic series of all time.

I did really like the book for the plot, but it was very male-centric and white-centric, which got annoying.

I was actually expecting more from this book. Nothing specific I can pinpoint that was bad, but it was just sort of "meh." A bit super-hero cliche, a bit predictable, a bit simplistic art and coloring, a bit awkward dialogue. But don't get me wrong, this was enjoyable, just not up to the standards I am used to with his Walking Dead series.

The teen hero, whether solo or a team of teens, is a very well examined idea, so one could have been forgiven for wondering just what Kirkman could bring to the table that we haven't seen before. Not much really, it's not the novelty of the ideas, it's how they are presented and the way they are combined. So family is a pretty common theme of teen comics, but we don't often get to see things from the viewpoint of what is essentially Superman's kid. Romantic subplots are a must (do teens even think about anything else?) but certainly not a focus here. Learning your powers, your place in the world? Yeah, that one we see everywhere in these early issues.

One could be forgiven for thinking that not a lot of creativity went into the early issues, many of the characters are pretty clear nods to better known characters, complete with the requisite ersatz JLA, but it's not easy finding fresh takes on comic book characters (especially since a big part of the appeal is their iconic nature) and there are certainly some refreshing twists.

Not quite as awesome as some reviews would make it out to be, but pretty darn good and a series I'll be looking to catch up on. (My current reading of these collections was powered by the much delayed recognition that most libraries have graphic novel collections now and inter-library loans are totally a thing. You'd think I was new to this or something.)
