The author's intention of creating awareness to the tragedy that was the Wilhelm Gustloff has been met because prior to reading this book, I had no idea that such a tragedy had occurred. I am glad I got to read this book. Having recently read All The Light We Cannot See, it was a bit strange reading some similar elements that are shared between the books. This obviously set me up to compare between the two books, and in my humble opinion, Anthony Doerr did it better.
It was funny, fascinating and scary at times reading about Alfred and watching him unravel. My heart broke for every other character in the book. All in all, it was a quick and enlightening read.

Great read. Not exactly what I expected walking in but I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the multiple narrative perspectives.
