I found the first portion incredibly interesting and informative. I liked listening to the audiobook as I looked up pictures of the places each section featured. Would be great to listen to portions on a road trip through the areas. My interest largely stemmed from having visited Mesa Verde prior.
The book just didn’t hold my interest. Pictures are vital for this topic and the audiobook lost its luster. The authors personal stories were more plentiful than I would have preferred. I was more interested in the facts than the personal journey.

A really beautiful and compelling story on the ways in which we think of ourselves as modern people, so devoid and different from those who lived in these lands before us. But really, we are following in their footsteps (and maybe many footsteps back in a lot of ways). A beautifully told story, using the author's own adventures to relate to the people of the past.

Too many side stories of trekking through areas; just couldn't stay interested.

This one is going to be short because I have so little to say about it. This isn’t a bad book, it’s just one that made me feel nothing. I think House of Rain would be very interesting if it were a TV series instead of a book but archeology is just... not an easy thing to write about in a captivating way. That’s all I really have to say about it. Sorry Mr. Childs.
