Gothic novel meets police procedural. Goofy, right? But I loved the characters, and I couldn't stop reading, so.....

Mitch Berger is a film critic who's having trouble dealing with the death of his wife. Desiree Mitry is a Black homicide detective in Connecticut who's having trouble dealing with prejudice. They meet over a body Mitch digs up when trying to plant a vegetable garden. The suspects are all the wealthy residents of a private island and everyone there is hiding something.

I enjoyed this one. It wasn't quite a tidy ending, but it did leave room for the series to continue, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

An engaging cozy mystery set in a WASP-y enclave in Connecticut.

Overall it was not a bad book, but there is potential. I gave this book 3 stars, since I will likely read more in the series. I found the who did it and why to be a bit improbable, which was another reason for the 3 stars. The writing was fine, and quite clever in some instances. It is possible that future books in the series will be better as the writer develops the characters.

This is a standard fair mystery with a couple of things that add to its interest: first it is realtively well written, which is always nice. Second, there is an interrecial romance, which adds interest. I also appreciate all of the film references, though I don't actually get most of them. Most importantly, in this, the first book of the series, the female lead lives in Woodbridge, CT. Specific roads are mentioned. Including one a street away from where I grew up. Sure, there are inaccuracies--the Stop and Show is rendered here as the A&P. But still!
