This book helped me get an idea of what it's like to have a multitude personality disorder, while also telling me that that's not what it is. It is a non-Western - or better said, Nigerian - view of mental illness and queerness and folklore. It was so interesting. But it was also super dark and I had to put this book down multiple times because I started hyperventilating a little bit. Also the chronology is a bit off but I decided to ignore that.

Freshwater is a novel that I didn't read when it first came out mostly due to the content warnings, and they are warranted - this is a difficult read. However, I'm so glad that I did read it -- it is incredibly well written, deeply affecting, innovative, and captivating -- magical realism at its absolute best. Beyond being an incredible story, Freshwater is a reflection on identity, selfhood, and spirit that is unlike anything I've ever read before. Incredible debut -- I very much look forward to reading Emezi's work.

This book fascinated me. It's beautiful and intriguing, but I feel like I missed a lot of things that made it so great. I debated between 4 & 5 star ratings because I think the story and writing deserve a 5 but I enjoyed it at a 4. Maybe on a re-read, going in with better understanding of what's happening, I will love it more
