Evidentemente.

this was a lot of fun but the
prison
part was suuuch a letdown considering how much it'd been hyped over the previous books ...

Grace just needs to make a decision and stick with it. Jaxon was annoying, but Hudson was perfect!

Why is this book so long? I'm not an editor (yet) but I feel like so much of this book could have been cut with nothing lost. There were so many sections that went on and on with nothing progressing. I honestly felt like I was losing my mind with how many times the characters would ask "what does that mean" and a second character explained-- sometimes taking several sentences or even full paragraphs to do it. It ranged from general expressions (Hudson asking what "piss in your blood cup" means) to comments (Grace asking Hudson to clarify his "no one's ever asked me that" line when she asks if he's okay), and it drove me absolutely insane.

I feel so bad for Jaxon getting sidelined so quickly. Everyone gets on Team Hudson and being friendly/joking with him. Which is super confusing since they spent the entire last book working to de-power him because they feared him. If there was any uncertainty, hesitation, or lack of trusts from any of the supporting cast, I missed it. I got the feeling sometimes Tracy forgets previous plot-beats because Jaxon was all "oh I wouldn't want to hurt my brother" over severing the mating bond between Hudson and Grace, when he had killed said brother before and was actively trying to take away all his powers. Those things he's fine with but severing the bond is too much. Yeah, okay. Hudson was the same way when he would comment on Jaxon being whiny or whatever when Hudson's behavior was pretty whiny as well. One thing I will say in support of the whole Jaxon debacle was how it was pointed out he and Grace didn't know each other before deciding they were in love. However one feels about Hudson and Grace, they did spend more time together. I also like the point that the mating bond shouldn't have mattered if the two had loved each other.

The strange thing about this book was I skipped so much of it and yet I still mostly followed what was happening. I did miss some of the finer details, though. Like Grace made a comment about not being able to imagine her friend group without Luca, and I couldn't help thinking "who's Luca?" I couldn't remember him being mentioned in the past two books at all and felt nothing when he died. I feel like he was introduced just to die-- similar to Xavier in the last book. On the whole, though, I largely followed the story. I just feel like there was no clear focus on goals. First it was trying to find this Crown to break the bond-- and even that was inconsistently built up, going from Hudson saying it didn't exist to not two chapters later saying it did. Then it was about finding this blacksmith to break the Unkillable Beast out of his prison; then it was about getting out of this jail. But through it all, it was hard to be invested since Grace just deus ex machina'd everything.

I think if I were to continue with this series, I'd go back to audio. Trying to read all this hurt my head and made me feel exhausted. I'm not sure I will finish it, though. There are still kernels of good stuff and now and then the silliness does come out, but there is just so much boring nothing to wade through.

The plot of this book takes a thrilling turn as events unfold one after another, interwoven with moments of romance. What pleasantly surprised me was the nuanced commentary on the prison system, offering a well-crafted fantasy perspective that subtly parallels the issues in the U.S. for-profit prison system. This unexpected depth elevates the story from a typical Young Adult romance novel to something much more profound and thought-provoking.
