Excellent book! Very funny and heartwarming at the same time. It was the first well-written historical novel I’ve read in a long time, too. I want to read other books by this author now. Highly recommend!
Really enjoyed this story from the period just before and as England entered WWI. A couple of minor characters were a little 2 dimensional, but overall it is well-written, and the narrator read it very well. I recommend it.
Complex and mostly well written. Not quite as good as what I remember of Major Pettigrew
adventurous
Been a while since I read this one so this may not align with my current tastes. I don't really remember this book other than it being WW1. It was an interesting historical read and I enjoyed it at the time.
It's hard to stomach how frivolous, cold, classist, and misogynist polite society in WWI Sussex can be, but so it was. I enjoyed bright eyed Miss Nash but rolled my eyes at her resignation to spinsterhood at 23. Would love if she got even more of a win.
When I got to 47% and still found myself waiting for the story to begin, I knew it was time to quit. The story is full of charming, eccentric small town personalities in a quaint setting, but it just drags and drags and drags. I'd love to know if I'm missing out on an amazing second half, but as of now, I can't bring myself to continue.
It was ok. Very long, very wordy, a lot of repetition that seemed unnecessary. I adored Beatrice Nash and her quiet resolve.
A comedy of manners set on the eve of the first world war. Gentle humor and a leisurely pace.
During the summer of 1914, Beatrice Nash moves to Rye where she becomes the first female Latin teacher for the school. While there, she becomes integrated into the community, adopts a Belgian refugee, and falls in love.
