Love the idea behind this book. It is certainly not a light hearted rom com, but a story of grief and growth and culture and community. I don’t love the friends with benefits trope, and again, I felt frustrated by the FMC as it seemed like she was so bent on lying to herself and all around her just to appease her parents. Parents opinions are important, add to that the trauma they all experienced, but for a 30yo to still strive to please unpleaseable parents, and for those parents to demand her submission, that’s one that just grates on me. Overall, loved the story, the characters, and the way they processed and matured, but there were times when it felt like the spice was added in unnecessarily, and with the things mentioned above, I’d probably give it a 3.5 star.

The story had some difficult topics to deal with, and I thought it was done in a really delicate way. the family dynamics were very relatable and honest. The ending felt a bit rushed, but the months leading up to it felt drawn out, so i guess it’s a balance. The narrators on audio were great!

This book felt like a warm hug. The characters were really well rounded and their reactions felt so real. I can understand why this book won a Goodreads award.
