Books exploring grief for a younger sibling who committed suicide will always hit me right where it hurts. The plotline did remind me of Anna Akana and her own personal experiences with grief and suicide. I wasn’t surprised to see that she was the sensitivity reader for this book. Overall it was a cute story and I enjoyed it. But nothing irritates me more when two people with a fwb dynamic go through the standard “we can’t fall in love/we are not a couple” conversation, only to continue acting like a couple. It feels like lazy writing.

This is my favorite book of the year so far, and quite possibly one of my favorite books of all time (and I don’t say that lightly)
Reading this felt like the perfect mash up of a silly little romcom (Emily Henry’s books, in particular) and the books that affect you more deeply, think Normal People by Sally Rooney or Talking at Night by Claire Daverely.
Helen and Grant will truly live with me forever. I started reading this at 1:30pm yesterday & was 75% in at 5:30pm. A true masterpiece of fiction. I’m already itching for a reread and I finished an hour ago. I can feel this story making itself at home inside my bones, nuzzled up for me to revisit whenever I want.
Helen & Grant’s relationship felt so realistic. Their feelings, both spoken and unspoken have left their mark on me in the most beautiful way.
I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Yulin Kuang & hope to read many more books by her. I also can’t wait to see her adaptations of EmHen come to life (whether that be director or screenwriter.)
I don’t usually write long reviews, but when a book makes you feel like this one made me, sometimes you have to shout it from the rooftops. I laughed & I cried.. and I miss these characters already. I hope they’re doing okay

Grant and Helen know each other from high school, where a traumatic event tied their lives together forever (check content warnings if needed). Now, thirteen years later, they are working as writers on the same TV show. Even though her parents hate him, they find themselves drawn toward each other.
I expected to like this book more than I did, as I usually like books with an emotional undertone. Unfortunately, it didn’t keep my attention for some parts. I did like the insight into TV show writing rooms, and I enjoyed Grant and Helen working through their feelings on their trips back to their hometown. However, I felt that the book was a little heavy on spice, when I wanted more of the emotional connection between the two of them. While it wasn’t a win for me, I know many readers have loved it, so please check it out if it sounds like your kind of book.

In general I don’t like romances, but thoroughly enjoyed this one. I wouldn’t have minded if there had been more relationship development during the middle part, but that’s my only reason for giving it 4 stars. I can’t wait for Yulin’s next book!
