I couldn’t really get the point of the story. She falls in love with someone who took yer sister off the planet. Yes, things can be forgiven. But falling in love is actually crazy. Some of the things that were stated like a “Helen sized lump” when she was sleep. Like who describes something like that. I just couldn’t root for them. I wish we would have gone more in depth about the reason why they both were in therapy. It was mentioned at the beginning of the book but seemed to trend very lightly at the end. He also said that he was struggling mentally either what happened that night. But it was never discussed on what he was feeling afterwards. Idk, i just couldn’t get behind it.

Unique premise and moments of great writing, but overall pacing was off for me and characters felt inconsistent at times also Helen getting into a car accident felt a bit unnecessary and a little lazy
This was a great palette cleanser. I enjoyed listening to the story as an audiobook and I didn’t mind the third act break up like I usually do. This break up made sense to me and the reconciliation was beautiful.

Kuang does well with creating characters with depth and who well-developed. While I’m not usually a fan of the third-act breakup, this book is one of the few where I would accept it because it makes sense to the broader narrative. Overall, the book is well-written, with just some awkardness in the spicier scenes.
