A D.I.D. story as only Shirley Jackson could tell it. This one grabbed my attention right from the start. And although I found the final chapter weak compared to the rest of the novel it was very enjoyable read with all of the classic Jackson-esque elements I was looking forward to.

"Someday," she said evilly, rubbing her hands against her eyes, "I am going to get my eyes open all the time and then I will eat you and Lizzie both." She was silent, and seemed to be meditating, and then she said quietly, "Doctor Wrong. And Lizzie the fool."
"Why, tell me, do you want to harm Elizabeth?"
There was another long pause, and at last she said, with hatred in her voice, "She's outside, isn't she?"

will write longer review later perhaps. i found this book slightly distasteful but also enthralling even tho it got a little boring at the end. i think i wanted it to get more terrifying. but i think shirley's thing is gesturing at the terrifying but never fully indulging. which generally makes things MORE scary. here, i think, it just ended up feeling pseudo-psychological (this is where the distaste comes from) and predictable. but yeah it's cool to read her earlier stuff and see her themes and conceits emerging

it was ok, the ending sucked (aka i didn’t understand it)
