Thank you to Michael J books for the advanced proof copy! All opinions expressed are my own.

I was pulled in quite quickly! It’s the first book this month that I couldn’t put down and finally got me completely out of my reading slump. I was hooked from start to finish, completing the book in 2.5 days! The writing was great, it felt like you were right there with Hannie.

I also learned a lot about WW2 in The Netherlands! There were many places I recognized and appreciated the use of Dutch phrases throughout the novel.

I loved getting to know all of the characters and they were all well developed! Jackson stuck very closely to the true stories and timeline, honestly this is one of the most accurate historical fictions I’ve read in a very long time.

This will for sure be a favorite for the month and so far my only 5 star read for June 🥰 I love this books is much, I just can’t seem to grasp the right words!

I highly recommend for any historical fiction readers and especially anyone who wants to read a about World War 2 from a different perspective (that’s not just the overwhelming amount of books set in France/Germany/UK).

This Dutch resistance novel got me thinking, as a lot of things do right now, about what I'm doing to resist fascism. How would I sign up to shoot Nazis?!? It also go me thinking about the unfairness even between saviors and saved. Hannie, a Dutch Christian hid her two Jewish friends in her parents' house. Hannie faced danger every day, but she also had autonomy while her friends sole job was to survive (as Hannie insisted).

But about this book--it's the fictionalization of Dutch resistance hero Hannie Schaft's life during WWII. It's compelling and reads as if it could be close to the unembellished truth, but what do I know? I hadn't known much of anything about the Dutch resistance and how the country was starved for four years. Nazis and cops--the absolute worst!
