This is a novella about a water spirit/god that interacts with a young woman on board a slave ship through the Middle Passage. The afterward/notes from the author are just as engaging as the story itself.

A short novelette shows the reader the emotional trauma that occurred during the slave trade and explains the experience through the eyes of a girl who doesn’t have the words to always properly explain what these new experiences are but makes you understand none the less. This was an amazing tale of strength, fear, determination, and a look into some of the spiritual religions on Africa. I really enjoyed my experience reading this and I think it truly helped me to learn a little bit more about the horrors that occurred during this time in history and the strength one individual can have.

The beauty of the writing in this story doesn't blunt the horror of the subject matter, and I'm impressed with the variety of emotions and experiences Elliott illustrates in such a limited word count. A lot of discussion could be generated just from the mythology in the story.
