As is common knowledge, this novel remains incomplete due to the death of the author, C.S. Forester. My rating merely reflects the fact that what we get is almost entirely composed of the setup of the main plot before it ends abruptly. From what we have been given, I can only imagine that this would have been an exciting and fascinating adventure for Hornblower, and I am sad that we will never see it fleshed out exactly as Forester intended.

Not sure the stars are a reflection of the writing or the fact that they lumped three stories together that were out of chronological order which was a bit annoying as I am trying to read them in the order they "happened" rather than the way they were written.
First story more fleshed out and enjoyable than the other two which are tales basically.

So disappointing that this book was unfinished. But it gave me a whole lot of great ideas, along with some interesting words/turns of phrase, to inspire me as I write a book set in the same time and similar situation.
A final hurrah for Hornblower. 3 short tales. The first was well on the way to being another 5-star novel until Forester's untimely death left it unfinished. A shame. 2 short stories follow, the last fitting end to the saga as an elderly Hornblower resides in comfort. Well worth reading and a feeling of sadness that the tale has reached its end.
Such a shame that Mr Forester died before he could finish this book. For the reader who followed Capt Hornblower's career with his particular mix of honor"","" adventure"","" intelligence and unrelenting ill fortune in bringing home prize money"","" there is not small satisfaction in seeing him get the ear of the masters of his field"","" the very secretary of the Royal Navy and his assistant.
I heard that Mr. Horatio Hornblower was the basis for the character of Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek's TNG, and so, nerd that I am, I simply had to read the Hornblower books. I am not disappointed in them. I find the character of Mr. Hornblower captivating and I look forward to reading more of the books. I am trying to read them in chronological order of Mr. Hornblower's life and career, but they were written in a very different order. This particular book begins fairly early in Mr. Hornblower's career, but the final story takes place at the very end of it, which frustrated my goal somewhat, but that's alright.

Wow I wish I would have read what Forester had in mind for the rest of this book! This would have been a great adventure.
