DNF!!!! I truly gave this book a shot. I really wanted to like it but it wasn’t going to happen. I think the story had a really good premise but it was entirely too slow and there was nothing to make you want to read more. The world building was right on target but when it came to the plot. Nothing was happening.

I DNFd this by about 200 pages so I don't think it fair of me to give a rating. I thought I might have liked this based on its whimsy but then someone said if you like caraval then you'll like this and it's put me into perspective ever since. I just don't really click with it and that's fine. I was intrigued by Ophelia and her uncle more than the love interest and upon revealing him, I really wasn't interested. Someone said they will never again read romance books where the men are ugly and I have to agree because god this was a struggle.

I am told it is a slow burn and I love a slow burn. However when the fourth book in the series is apparently still in French, I saw reason to abandon my half arsed efforts and look elsewhere. Just not for me.

Is it perfect? No. But I did fall in love with it and the characters. Yes, they're annoying and make bad decisions. But there's something so compelling about them as well. And romance? Nearly nonexistant but still there enough that I am DYING to see what happens with them next. Perfectly wintery and cozy.
