As a "let's get this conversation moving forward" kind of book it does its job perfectly. Adapted from the Ted Talk it still reads beautifully and I enjoyed the way she points out how far we still have to go without, for lack of a better way of putting it, throwing stones. It comes across as a dialogue and that is what it is meant to be. Excellent.
Such a great little book. It's so small that I wish I owned a box of them, and could keep a stash in my purse to hand out to people.

Choosing not to rate because, while I enjoyed certain aspects of this essay and of course agreed with the overall message of Adichie's work, upon further research, she seems to take issue against the LGBTQ+ community, most notably trans people. While I haven't done enough research to feel comfortable labeling her as a TERF necessarily, I think anytime someone is agreeing with JKR on the subject of marginalized people is almost always a bad indication.
Talks about important topics like equality and what makes a feminist, and why ~obviously~ we should all be feminists

A good piece that answers the question 'Why should we be feminists?' . it's not actually a book about feminism it self as a term and explanations nor of it's history and future as a movement, but rather a simple explanation of 'Why?' , 'Why the word feminist? why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?' Because that would be dishonest. feminism is of course part of human rights in general- but to choose to use the vague expression human rights is to deny the specific and particular problem of gender. it would be a way of pretending that it was not women who have, for centuries, been excluded" and it also contains some examples of the writer's experiences with acts that violates female rights for an equal life. it's well written in a very simple way that you can read it on the go.
those are some of the quotes I liked:
"culture doesn't make people. people make culture if it's true that the full humanity of women is not in our culture, them we can and must make it our culture"
"Masculinity is a hard, small cage, and we put boys inside this cage"
"Our society teaches a woman at a certain age who is unmarried to see it as a deep personal failure. while a man at a certain age who is unmarried has not quite come around to making his pick"
"We teach girls shame. Close your legs, Cover yourself. we make them feel as though by being born females, they are already guilty of something. and so girls grow up to be women who cannot say they have desire. who silence themselves. who cannot say they truly think. who have turned pretence into an art form"
" The problem with gender is that it prescribe how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. imagine how happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn't have the weight of gender expectations".

makes me angry to know how many people still do not understand the plight of us, as women. i will never understand if they cannot see it or just turn a blind eye. Chimamanda's life seemed difficult but she is truly inspiring.
some of the lines that stole my heart :
Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture
The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn’t have the weight of gender expectations.
Gender matters everywhere in the world. And I would like today to ask that we should begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently.
she finishes beautifully, My own definition of a feminist is a man or a woman who says, ‘Yes, there’s a problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it, we must do better.’
All of us, women and men, must do better

I listened to this and I kept thinking “wow that was awesome, I want to write that down” every five seconds so basically you should just read/listen to it. audiobook is 45 minutes and I listened to it at 2.75x. loved that the author read it too!! so good and so important
