Some nice inspiration and good advice in this book. Historical quotes feel a bit off, they greatly simplify the reasons for a certain outcome. That being said, having a positive mindset and a winners mentality will not guarantee success in any way, but it does make everything more fun!

I enjoyed this. I’ve been intrigued by stoicism for awhile and this is a nice snack of that content. I think true to the author’s intention, this book is best read in bits and pieces as a pep talk and not as a deep interpretation or analysis of philosophy. Taken as a whole and at face value there are plenty of contradictions, but taken bit by bit there is value in each story.
inspiring reflective medium-paced

I f you haven't read any of the stoics, this is a great introduction to Stoicism and emotional regulation. Holiday is a true lifelong learner, having read hundreds of books and publishing multiple before the age of 30. In this book, Holiday discusses the power of Stoicism and finding benefits from challenges. He takes lessons from many leaders who have employed Stoicism - Roosevelt, Lincoln, Shakespear - and succinctly applies them to modern-day life.

“The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.”

“Focus on the moment, not the monsters that may or may not be up ahead.”

“Just because your mind tells you that something is awful or evil or unplanned or otherwise negative doesn’t mean you have to agree. Just because other people say that something is hopeless or crazy or broken to pieces doesn’t mean it is. We decide what story to tell ourselves.”

“Where the head goes, the body follows. Perception precedes action. Right action follows the right perspective.”

“You know what’s better than building things up in your imagination? Building things up in real life.”

Did not finish. Not my thing.

This is a life-changing book that forces you to really examine how you approach obstacles in your life. This is definitely one to mull over!

Easy to understand and a quick read; enjoyed the perspective.

So much to ponder in this book. Holiday lays out various examples of people who have been creative, driven, and persistent with their futures in order to live in better ways. I highlighted a lot and will definitely keep this book in my back pocket.

I began a deep study of Stoicism a few weeks ago and in the midst of all the depth that I was looking for I picked up this book and realized it did not have much of the depth at all. I understand that he is trying to appeal to a broader audience. But in the process, I feel this book waters down the ideas of stoicism but presents them in a way that would contradict some of the ideals of the philosophy it is touting. It comes across as pop philosophy with stories that seem pretty much cherry-picked to make the points over and over. It felt manufactured and the lack of depth added to the artifice.

Mostly if you read this book please look further into stoicism read some of the early texts find some well-researched books by authors who have learned how to truly present the core foundation and principles of the Stoic philosophy with integrity and depth. Stoicism is a philosophy I am finding to be incredibly beneficial in my life right now and the watered-down version wouldn't have really made an impact for me.
