some of you leaving reviews for this book weren’t kicked out of new york and haven’t had to deal with that unbearable amount of grief and it shows
took me a while to get through this but i thoroughly enjoyed it, i love the authors writing style and the vibe surrounding new york. it was published in 2003, so it feels like a real moment in time - i think if it was published past 2010 the vibes would be v different. all in all, this book was a comforting read and i would definitely revisit :)

To my earlier, glowing impression of Whitehead writing style which emulates how a city dweller moves in, against, through and away from crowded spaces (human, building, otherwise -- I'll add one sticking point - the wandering point of view.
95 out of 100 times, Whitehead's distinctive style elicted awe and illumination. Pretend Whitehead's pen is a roving camera, and his swift yet graceful moves, though to thought, across genders, social classes, ethnicities, occupations, is electrifying.
Then the 5 out of 100 times, the magnificent device gives me pause.. At times the social chasms between the city people whose inner thoughts Whitehead discloses are so wide, his jumps are jarring to me. I'm curious if others react similarly, or go with the flow.
