Emily is a bookstore manager who loves books and cannot find a decent boyfriend. No one can live up to Mr. Darcy. When her best friend, Stella, tries to convince her to join her on a single’s week in Mexico, she instead heads to England for a Jane Austen book tour. There she meets a group of lovely, but older women and a male journalist, Spike, writing an article on why women love Mr. Darcy. Throw in a living fictional Mr. Darcy and you’ve got a strange story with some funny moments as well as a lot of blah ones too.

There were moments when the story was actually funny or enjoyable, such as moments when Emily and Spike interacted with each other. These were the heart of the story.

However, there were a ton of moments when I just couldn’t get into the story and just wanted to get back to the plot between Emily and Spike.

Whenever Mr. Darcy was interacting with Emily, I just wanted to skip those scenes. They seemed forced and didn’t really add anything to the story. I feel like it would have been stronger had Emily came to the realization that real life men could be good despite the fictional Mr. Darcy.

Personally, the story was strongest when it focused on Emily and Spike’s budding romance. Had the story remained focused on paralleling the original story with a modern twist it would have been better.

I also got a bit annoyed when Emily, a self proclaimed bookworm, was getting annoyed with Mr. Darcy’s views when she knows he was based in a different time period than herself. She, instead, becomes annoyed and believes they have different views. Well, yeah. You would have different views than a man from a completely different era. Things were different then. There is no need to be surprised that he would find it strange that a woman has *gasp!* a job.

Also, annoying were the moments when Emily would want to do something like text or call him and hold that against Mr. Darcy when, again, he is based in a different time before cell phones. Over time it would get a bit grating and annoying.

There were a few things I liked though. As I said, interactions between Emily and Spike were interesting and even funny at times. A few other characters are interesting and enjoyable.

There are also a few other side stories going on that keep the main story together as well. Stella and Freddy with a marriage that Freddy wishes were real while Stella denies her feelings, A woman with a sad story about giving her daughter up for adoption, and a story of a man with a history of screwing women out of money with false promises of happily ever afters.

Overall, the story outside of the Darcy interactions was a bit funny and could be enjoyable. I might eventually read this again, this time skipping the Darcy interactions and getting right to the best parts.

Mild spoilers. Cute and funny, but I could not believe an Austen fan would cuss at Mr. Darcy because of his antiquated views. I really didn't see how he would be attracted to her at all, so generously gave this 3 stars.

Really a lame book, that was kind of weird, not much of a plot and way too much swearing. Not worth the time.

Enjoyed the parallel of the modern story and the Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice story - could have done without some of the excessive uses of coarse language- seemed unnecessary and didn't add to the character of Emily. ( Would be a great young adult read with just a few cleanups -which I suspect Ms Potter wished to avoid)

Rather predictable- but owing to the literary linkup also somewhat unavoidable.

A lighthearted retelling of a modern day Pride & Prejudice under the guise of a Jane Austin tour. The best part of the story was the inclusion of our heroine meeting Mr. Darcy - and coming to realization that if Mr. Darcy was actually a real man, he would not quite be the fantasy man one might imagine from reading P&P.
