I won't continue with the series as I didn't find it interesting enough to care for the future of the characters.

I cannot wait to read the next in the series - I love the mystery and unknown as well as the questions of humanity, freedom, morality and technology.

I did really want to like this one, and I think other under circumstances, I might have.

I went into it knowing that other people did have issues with how the story was structured, and thought "I've heard stories told out of order before; I'm sure it's not as bad as it sounds." It may not have been that bad, if it hadn't happened so many times. Having so many instances where Oichi told us how something turned out before telling us the steps that led to that point really took a lot of the suspense out of what should have been a thriller. This, coupled with the idea that Oichi was raised to be emotionless and logical (which the author did execute so flawlessly that I really felt absolutely nothing for almost the entire the book), made a lot of the first 50-60% of the novel drag for me.

But the story underneath had such good bones that I have a hard time writing it off completely. If it had been presented in a more linear (and therefore more suspenseful) fashion and/or with a little more indulgence for Oichi's emotions, I think it really would have been quite good.

Really good read. Different from other scifi being released these days, which is refreshing.

An original work of scifi, this fascinating story is narrated from the enigmatic perspective of a ship maintenance worker. Intriguing descriptions of a life on a generation ship. Extremely well written social commentary that can be unilaterally applied, with an unexpected twist.

Gorgeous cover, but unfortunately rather boring. A lot of references to music and movies which felt like it distracted from the story. Was I supposed to have looked them up and played them while reading or what was the purpose of its inclusion?

A woman on a generation ship who's been modified to be a Servant. She's also been modified by her father to be able to connect to a sentient machine. They have to navigate their highly stratified society to try to effect social change.

I don't love stories about highly stratified societies (i.e., rich vs poor). This one also has tech that's basically indistinguishable from magic in some cases.

Also, many, many people blown out of airlocks as a means of execution.

It was fine.

That ending! So may questions I want answered, but in a good way. There was enough resolution that I wasn't just left hanging but questions were still asked that left me wanting more. Since this appears to be book #1, it looks like I will be getting that more, thankfully!

I love Oichi and her murderous solutions.
