Well, that was a story.
But maybe it isn't about the story. Maybe it's about the humanity. The comprehension. The compassion. The understanding. Sure we could look at this as another example of fate being like "F U" but this story speaks more to the choices one makes than the whims of the gods.

unhingedddddddd- i can't even describe how much fun this was except to gift you with this one line:
"I have to govern."
"Not govern badly !?!?11?!1/?!"
But also rebutting accusations of you being guilty of murder with "no u" is just GOLD-
(at least uni readings aren't as dry as in high school)

I think I wouldn't have liked it as much as I did if it wasn't for the audiobook.
About halfway though this drama, I realized I was in fact reading the first ever noir. There is no mystery to solve or discovery to make (as in detective literature). Instead, the audience knows exactly what has happened from the very beginning (as did the Greek audience in Sophocles' time). We know who the murderer is and what he has done. What plays out is not an investigation, but a psychological struggle by an alienated protagonist to come into that knowledge. And, of course, Oedipus already knows on some level, if not from the beginning then clearly after Tiresias makes an appearance. This is a play about the refusal to engage in uncomfortable self-reflection--a self-inflicted blindness to resist the pain that comes with self-knowledge. (As the Messenger says near the end of the play: "troubles hurt the most / when they prove self-inflicted.") And is it any wonder that Tiresias becomes such a central figure in the 20th century for modernists? As the blind prophet with INsight, he forces us to see the unsettling truths of our own century. On one hand, I wish I had read this play sooner. On the other hand, I'm glad I was able to read it at an age when I can appreciate its vast influence.

10/10 would recommend reading this in zoom class with a bunch of teenagers who are NOT actors and are slightly embarrassed to be reading but are also trying their damned hardest
