An enjoyable sci-fi journey that I wish I hadn't waited so long to get to after finishing the original trilogy. It's not an overly complex work but that goes in it's favor, never really biting off more than it can do with it's characters and narrative but being inviting and not ever feeling laden down by tropes that other works hitting the niche often fall apart under. It's readable, fun, and makes you want to continue on (though this isn't a tv series I don't need the cliffhanger ending of it). While it's been a few years since I did the original trilogy I will say the world building feels much more full here and when it takes on new topics it feels more grounded and mature (for a lack of a better term coming to me in the moment).

Some small quips to it that kept the rating into solid 4* territory. I think there was one too many storylines probably (the two that intertwine makes one of them expendable) OR one of them could have ended a few sections earlier and not stretched the length of the book. There's a little bit of mud in the middle third that probably could've helped eliminate and it would also make the ends of some character arks a bit more impactful. I think that's telling in the fact that there were several times I was annoyed by who the perspective was shifting from/to. I see the vision for what Brown was doing with them, and it's not bad or wrong, but I feel could've been approached in a way that helped out the book in a few areas. And, while I don't think the novel ever overstays it's welcome, I don't think knocking 25-75 pages from this 600+ page work by making some tweaks like that would've been the worst thing in the world.

But that's a lot of words on minor quibbles because there's not any major ones I have and it's really just a solid novel in the RR story. Not exceptional but very fun and if the original trilogy had you enjoying it you will continue enjoying it.

One of my favourite books of all time.

I feel that in the second trilogy Pierce Brown took more time to introduce the characters and build them up. I feel the red rising world was also built more.

I also could have never guessed all the plot twists and the way the book was going to go, people say that the next two books are even more insane. The ending to that book was amazing and so dark and so sad. I cannot wait for the next one.

I loved getting the point of views from multiple characters and looking at the point of view of the rising from different lenses.

This book got some of the worst reviews out of any of the red rising books and I highly disagree compared to the first 3. We will see what the next two bring.

adventurous emotional sad medium-paced

A big change from the previous books in the series, with the large time jump as well as the multiple storylines and character perspectives, it definitely took me a while to get into the book. That being said, I do believe the perspectives were great at fleshing out more of the story and world, and awarding some characters (other than Darrow) well deserved arcs and depth. By the end of the book I definitely felt the story had taken a much darker turn, which makes me both excited & nervous for where the story will take me next.

Still cannot praise Pierce's writing enough. His writing style I absolutely adore.
