A decent start of the series after the first trilogy. I like the different POV structure, along with the audiobook cast doing a great job of bringing the characters to life.

This book! Okay I DNFed this book a couple times, maybe because I was in the wrong headspace for it. Such a great continuation of this world. I do get lost in the multiple POV of it all and man all of the names and relationships are tough to keep up with but man was this good!

Maybe I just need a breather from this series, but I didn't like Iron Gold as much as the others. I still enjoyed it overall, but it was just long-winded and sluggish in a way that none of the prior three are. I really don't think it earned its length. I think a lot of the beginning third (half?) should have been left as backstory. There was so much laying of ground work and so little pay-off. I understand that this is only the first book of its arc, but Red Rising pulled off being both a first act and a self-contained novel, so I know Brown can do it.
Conceptually, there were so many ideas I loved. Resentful young Red Gamma girl as a foil to Darrow? Love. Lysander as a kind of antihero going on side quests with a cynical Cassius? Love. Depressed middle aged gay guy pulling heists? Love love love. It just didn't excel in execution.

This book was dreadful. I love darrow, yet this book turned him into a stupid character. I hate it when an original series is so perfect but the author decides to change the ending. I like eph and lyrias chapters the most. Lysander is a whiny bitch, and darrow was spiraling down. I dont like how pierce brown has turned one of my favorite characters into a bad father, a bad husband, and a shortsighted leader. I need to keep reading to see how it will end. For now, i will trust that there is redemption to come.
The plot and politics were great as always. I liked seeing how fragile democracy is and how easy it is to fall back into tyranny. Lyria’s perspective was the best. She shows how progress isn’t enough.
The multiple perspectives felt redundant at times. I also feel like this book is riding on the greatness of the first three. Its not even three stars on its own.
My predictions for the next book:
The red hand and the syndicate are linked. Harmony leads the red hand.
Cassian is still alive.
Lyria is still alive (im manifesting this one)
