Cozy mystery that was kind of boring; two former schoolmates reconnect after WWI and investigate a murder in a small English village. Rather than being cute and quaint, it was a bit drab and lacked engaging characters.

Funny and lovely mystery. A very enjoyable duo of senior sleuths, the flamboyant Beryl and the sensible and mousy Edwina investigates together.
The duo is absolutely fantastic as well as the cast of characters. The historical setting, England post WWI, is well researched and the cast of characters is well developed. The book is really well written.
The book is very likable and I look forward to read the next instalment.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to review this book.

I don't know what a "cozy" mystery is, but I see that almost everyone who read and reviewed this call it that. (So I learned a term; that's good.) Well, it was cozy, I suppose. A lot of tea time and such. But the main problem is really the pacing. Slow to begin and with some unnecessary the-plot-so-far monologs, the novel really only picks up in the last third part, where all red herrings are followed up and eliminated. The reveal was interesting, and so was some of the political and socioeconomic commentary, but sometimes there were contradictions. The small village life was successfully caricatured, so though most characters seemed one-dimensional, I thought this was spot on in terms of the humor of the book.
