A lovely start to what, I presume, will be a series of Beryl and Edwina mysteries. The novel starts off a bit rough - the first two chapters didn't grab me at all - but the female friendship and humor at the core of the this book is well worth sticking around for. Look, the mysteries, such as they are, are inscrutable and not explained with a surfeit of clarity but Ms. Ellicott does have a lot of interesting angles with regard to class and female autonomy in the early 20th century. A definite recommend.

I received an ecopy from the publishers and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars.

This books was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the set up to the detective duo of Edwina and Beryl. They are old boarding school friend, one American, one British. The story is set directly after WWI and the influenza pandemic of the 20's (which relevant at the moment)! Edwina is a well to do single woman down on her luck due to financial issues. Beryl is a famous and rich adventuress who is tired of the spotlight. Beryl sees her old friend's ad for a boarder and wham! You've got a set up where the two main characters have an established past and working on together like they do is plausible and well done.

This isn't a high adventure mystery. It most definitely is a cozy mystery to read for comfort and enjoyment. I liked both characters except I do take issue with Edwina and her class structure prejudices, but that does make sense in terms of when this is set and her situation. I'm looking forward to seeing her grow as a character.

I will be continuing the series.

Recommend.

When her old friend comes to stay with her old school friend Edwina, Edwina's life changes forever.

When rumour spreads that the two woman are looking into something hinkey that happened in the village, Edwina's life is threatened and another murder occurs.

This is a traditional who done it in the Agatha Christie style, reminiscent of Miss Marple, set in the 1920's country village England. There are local characters, mysterious pasts and a lot of information gathered by talking to people.

It was a fun audible listen, and lovers of cosy mysteries will get a buzz from this.

A perfect cosy mystery. Fun and relaxing. Can’t wait to read the next one.

I like it, the writing is charming with some wit, but it took way too long to get through. Perhaps I simply wasn't in the right mood?
