This was an easy, pleasant book to get through. Old timey mystery, two charming and unlikely detectives. Nothing thrilling or particularly suspenseful, but enjoyable.

A decent, light murder mystery. The narrator is good although occasionally forgets which accent she needs to use. The characters are likeable. The plot was basic, typical small town mystery but it all held my interest pretty well. Nothing spectacular but a good pick for a Murder She Wrote lover.

Sometimes a good escape to an English village is exactly what is needed.
But…
Beware.
Murder.
This is the first in the Beryl and Edwina mystery series.
Miss Edwina Davenport is a genteel Englishwoman. She is prim and proper and in need of a lodger. Finances just aren’t what they use to be, since the great war.
Miss Beryl Helliwell is an American who has been divorced, loves to travel and quite an adventuress, everything that Miss Edwina, is not. But now she would just like to settle down, and letting this place seems like the perfect solution.
Still…
Don’t think it will be all quiet for the two. Beryl enjoys excitement.
So...
Beryl decides to start a rumor that she and Edwina were intelligence agents during the War, and are now interested in being private investigators for the village – not a typical job for a proper woman of this era.
But then…
Edwina is attacked that very evening! In her garden! What?!
And then…
A local girl turns up dead.
There is something sinister happening in town!
So, what are these 2 ladies to do?
Investigate, of course!
Light. Charming. Likable leading heroines. Cute. Cozy. More character oriented than climatic mystery resolution.
I think one is enough for me.
But…

I expected to like this much more than I did. The setting and theme are favorites but I found this a slog, when through audiobook. The narration was a bit off-putting - the pace was strange with long pauses in unnecessary places. Neither of the main characters were lovable or interesting. The mystery was more engaging, though, and I learned about the tin masks injured vets wore after World War I. A fine, if not fabulous, listen over tea.
medium-paced
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway and am very happy I did! This is a very well written cozy mystery set in the 1920's, providing a compelling look into the life of people in Britain while recovering from the first world war.
There are a number of characters major and minor, yet all are well explored. You get to know the two heroines the most, of course, and they are fascinating and entertaining. It is refreshing as well to have the main characters a bit older than usual.
The mystery itself is fast paced, with lots of twists and turns, and keeps you guessing right to the end.
If you like cozy mysteries, especially those set in the 20's such as those by Lee Strauss or Leighann Dobbs, I highly recommend this book. I hope to see more of these characters and the book certainly seems to be setting up a series.
