This lovely novella lends an intimate view into to the life of one Indian family, their struggles as they rise from poverty into wealth and the accompanying disturbances to their psyches. The translation is very clean. The language and story eloquent and simple. I really loved this book.

4.5 all the way up to the end because I was waiting for whatever the misogynist MMC deserved. 1 star because it never came. Love Anita, the only person in the book who deserves happiness, along with the barely mentioned ex romantic interest

I will never know if this is one of those novels whose quality is diminished in translation, because the novel (or novella) is most engrossing when describing familial relationships, but very average otherwise. The most interesting characters are given almost no time to live on the pages, while the protagonist (who remains unnamed incidentally) wanders between interesting and dull as the 100 odd pages pass. However, the prose is well written/translated and reads easily, with simple phrasing and language, something evidenced by my reading the book in a couple of hours.

In the interest of keeping this review shorter than the book itself, the book was good in some portions, but I don't see what all the hype was about. Read, but with no expectations.

A little gem of a novel which explores the subtle corrupting effect of money. In a very short book it gives you an insight into a very different way of life and family dynamics.

Great world building, unique style. Weak story or ending.

A great theme though.
In India no family has explicit values, but they exist. But then money and riches come, life gets comfortable. The people stop talking about values.

Unlike Church going societies, there is no community to keep your families values in check.
Good book.
