This book was on my list for many years. I was quite excited to start reading it as many friends had told me how good it was. I finished it within a week as it was quite simple reading. It was a good story with some interesting characters however I felt it finished quite abruptly. I was left wondering what happens to the women in the book, what becomes of the narrator and what about the chikappa? It left me intrigued to know more. It also left me quite sad with the reality that the book touches upon - In a life with not much , the family is close to each other but with riches come distance. There is a strong moral behind it however I did feel that it is quite a simplistic notion as life is not that linear. I however would be very interested in a sequel :)

First read 05/2025

A very effective dissection of the effect sudden wealth has had on a poor family. A little too grim for me to really enjoy it, but it certainly didn't overstay its welcome. Excellent thematic and character work with evocative writing.

Ghachar Ghochar is so easily bingeable, psychologically deconstructing how various people are affected by money. There are amazing discussions in this short novel around material possession, greed, the value of money, class-based anxiety, traditional values, and the role of women. I would have loved for this to be longer, and for some elements to be expanded upon, but perhaps the ambiguity arising from the novel’s short, concise length is what makes it so memorable.
