Astounding! Made me nostalgic for 90's Bangalore, not that I remember much of it. Can we be nostalgic for a city we still live in?

It wasn't "relatable" precisely, but it brought out something in me when I read about akki rotti, dosas, black ants and brown ants, the Old Bangalore pictures at the cafe, and the tea/coffee obsession! I immediately went and asked my mom if she could make akki rotti for me sometime this week. It's been a while.

I had been putting off reading this for quite sometime now, somehow expecting a mediocre read with hyped up reviews. I was quite wrong. [a: Shanbhag|787768|Vivek Shanbhag|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png] has drawn each of the characters really well, which itself is an achievement, given how short this book is. Ghachar Ghochar is a tale of upward mobility and the corruption of moral underpinnings by wealth. The central theme is not novel but the characters, the setting and the writing style make for an intriguing tale, narrated skillfully by the author.

Shanbhag draws the reader in the simple yet intriguing world of the narrator right from the beginning. Keen observations of the mundane is what uplifts this novella and makes it a delight to read. The ending, when it comes, takes one by surprise. Yet, somehow, you have a vague premonition of what is to come, which makes the tale even more fascinating-and quite frankly leaves your mind in ghachar ghochar .

Being multilingual myself, I am acutely aware that much is lost in translation. However, having grown up on a diet of the Russian literature (like most Bengalis!), and more recent forays into Spanish, Italian and Japanese literature has made me much more open to translated works. I do not understand Kannada, and although much may indeed have been lost in tranlation, [a:Srinath Perur|7578573|Srinath Perur|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1451288904p2/7578573.jpg] has done a commendable job. Overall, a recommended read for a lazy afternoon.

A short and sweet novella about a suddenly wealthy family who doesn't know what to do with themselves or their newfound riches.

I have mixed feelings. It was alright and I found it interesting, but I was also left with a feeling of incompleteness. It's a book about what's not said rather than what's said. I found it slow and static, even though I still felt tense and uneasy while reading it. I would like to say that I loved it but I didn't.
