Yum! I had intended to knit last night - but that somehow ended up with me lying in bed an hour later than I normally go to bed and finishing this book.

This book threw me for a loop at first - The point of view shifts between Hope and Lucas through most of the book. I would normally find this annoying - but I think it was a good way to weave the subplot into the plot. It was all pretty much tied together anyway - so it was just a perspective switch that you had to get over. And I think the stuff that happens with Lucus will ultimatly be more important in the arc of the books than what happened with Hope.

Anxious to dig into the next one to see where this leads.

I wanted to read this book because I love fantasy. However, I’ve only ever read young adult fantasy and wanted something with adults rather than teenagers skipping school or lying to their parents to save the world. I have watched the TV and always wanted to read the series. During lockdown, I rewatched the TV show and forgot how much I loved it and decided it was time to read the book and see how the rest of the series went. The first couple of books, I adored and really enjoyed, but as this series is going on, I’m needing more motivation to carry on with it. I’m just getting more and more disappointed.

This book is based on Hope Adams, who we’ve met in the series. She has a demon father and she has inherited his hunger for chaos and she has a talent for finding it. When she is asked to infiltrate a violent gang of supernaturals in Miami, she can’t resist the excitement. But the trouble can be intoxicating and soon she is in way too deep. With a killer stalking the city’s mystical hot spots, Hope becomes dangerously entangled and has no choice but to turn to her werewolf ex-boyfriend for help. What started as a simple investigation has spiralled into chaos and Hope is wanting to find a way out.

Just like the other books within this series, I was disappointed. I think it didn’t help that I couldn’t remember where we met Hope originally. It was just like Hope is doing great and she’s got boy problems and I was like who is this person again? I liked the mystery aspect over who was killing the gang in Miami and Hope being like a reporter and being a detective and I love that Karl and the pack made a reappearance, I would have loved an actual appearance from the pack and not just mentioned. Karl was the reason this book didn’t get 2 stars. Even thought there was a mystery aspect which I usually love, it was just very slow going and I was dying to know who did it.

I think I’ve read too much mystery/thriller because I guessed who the killers were quite quickly and was just waiting for Hope and Karl to put the pieces together.

I think my standards were set too high by the first book and Elena being a kickass powerful woman and the pack being the protective boys. I don’t mind the witches and everything, but I will always want the books with the wolf pack.

Hope is a reporter and has the added talents of a half-demon-seeing the past and having a real lust for chaos. When the powerful Cortez Cabal family ask her for help, she finds herself infiltrating a gang of bored supernatural kids who are causing chaos and violence across the city. The Cabal once helped Hope and now need her help and she may be in over her head.

I read this series originally a bit out of order so this was the first one I read featuring Hope and I liked her. She is tough, resourceful and feisty as you expect in a heroine by Kelley Armstrong, but she has big flaws like her love of chaos which can easily derail her. She has to use her brain and power to pass a tricky entry test to get into the gang and she has to hang out at a club getting rich men to spend their money, robbing people's houses while they are drunk at the club etc giving her a chance to feed on chaos that occurs. Her mission and possible romance with Jaz are under threat when her on-off werewolf boyfriend Karl shows up in town to stop her. I liked seeing Karl in this book and you get an idea of his motivations and personality in his interactions with Hope. I wasn't really a fan of Hope getting with Jaz but I guess I'm biased in favour of werewolves in this series!

Unusually, the narration is shared with Lucas, husband of Paige the witch, son of the Cabal boss who hires Hope. I found this a bit strange when the series is about the supernatural women. It didn't ruin the book or anything but I felt that it wasn't really necessary. I don't think it really added anything to the story. It just seemed like an excuse to bring in Paige and Savannah.

Another good read in the series. As usual you have a fast plot with plenty of action and characters that are interesting and engaging.

I love the characters in this series and I am really fascinated with the fantasy aspect to the story. I am looking forward to the mystery that will be uncovered. The writing was really good and helped develop the storyline but I feel like the chemistry between the characters could have been more intense.

Of the "Women of the Otherworld" I prefer Elena, then Jamie, then Savannah and her mother, then Paige and Hope. Paige and Hope strike me as being kinda spoiled.

I really liked this book. I liked Hope a lot. I like the twisted plot of her being a half demon. I hate how she seems to find chaos and dangerous things to do at every turn. I love how the Cabal family hires her to go undercover and join a gang which consists of kids rebelling. I love how we get to see Paige and Lucas again. I hate how people in the gang start getting killed and Hope's guy went missing. I like how they get everything fixed and help Hope. I definitely loved Hope's story and can't wait to read more about her. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone. 10 stars.
