This was the best book I've read all year. The characters are round and engaging and I really appreciate the author's keen sense of humor slipped in ever so secretly. And I will never look at Kenny G. the same way again!

In this case, I'm glad that I watched the movie version first as it really compliments the novel. The novel is very different and wonderfully written. Quick's witty prose definitely provided the basis for the film and really keep you going page after page.
Too much Eagles football talk. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I really hope it's better than the book.
I listened to this as an audiobook on Audible. I absolutely LOVED this book. A true emotional roller coaster and I enjoyed every minute.
I finished the book then watched the film. Big mistake as always. Pat's internal dialogue makes this story and the lack thereof in the film plus the plot changes to the screen play killed the film for me. I give the book 4 and the film 2 stars.
Highly enjoyable. I saw the movie first, and really liked how they adapted this for the big screen. Not mind-blowing, but a good read.
This was an odd little book. If you are looking for a quick read, a unique narrative voice, an ungodly amount of football, and an ultimately forgettable book then this book is for you. I was really impressed with Quick's Sorta Like a Rock Star and I had high hopes for The Silver Linings Playbook, and, truthfully, it certainly didn't hurt that the trailer for the movie looks good, but I was pretty disappointed overall. Both books have a really unique narrator with a very distinctive voice and both books have a vast cast of crazy characters. While the zany, not especially realistic characters worked in Sorta Like a Rock Star, here I found the characters mostly undeveloped and I didn't have much of a connection to them. They felt like flat, stock characters, and, to be fair, that might be what Quick intended.
Pat, our narrator, just got out of a mental institution and doesn't know how long he was in there for, has hallucinations about Kenny G (seriously), and is waiting for his "apart time" from his wife to be over. He isn't really all there and the book is from his perspective, and, perhaps, that is why the characters around him remain undeveloped. It's a theory.
Pat's voice is really unique but, unfortunately, I didn't like it. He repeats himself, he references football constantly blech, and he is a little slow. He reminds me of people who talk really slowly in real life, and you constantly want to finish their sentences. Yes, yes, Pat, Eagles, great...Good God get to the point.
I didn't lose myself in this book. I didn't connect to the characters, and I didn't quite understand how the other characters were connecting when nothing seemed to be happening. I found the ending satisfactory. The mystery of Kenny G was solved :). Many, but not all, of the questions that popped up were resolved, if quickly. While nothing is wrapped up in a neat package, it works in this book, because the characters are really messed up and a neat ending would not have been true to that.
So, an alright book. Pretty forgettable, but a quick and entertaining read nonetheless.
