This book follows Jane's life - her husband and her group of friends. The dynamics suddenly change one day when a new friend Lexie is introduced to the group. The story itself was well developed but it took me some time to get into the story.
The themes expressed are very pertinent and I would be thinking about them today.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. This doesn't impact my opinion in any way.

"There is no baby..."
What. A. Book.
I couldn't put it down.
I went down a rabbit hole of twists and turns at every corner. When I thought I had it figured out, I was glady mistaken as I went further into the book.
An emotional ending.
Highlights issues being faced in today's society, something that isn't spoken about enough, but unfortunately does happen.
Bravo S.E Lynes.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A twisted tale of toxic friendship. The tale is told from different view points, but the chapter titles mean it's easy to keep track of. I guessed some of the twists, but this didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book overall, and I'd read more by this author.

Okay, so I totally had every little twist figured out ~ you can even ask my family because I yelled it out to them. It's making me think I am reading too many thrillers, BUT I still very much enjoyed it. Totally gave me HS mean girl vibes a few times, even though these ladies are in their 30's. Holy drama drama drama!
The prologue pulls you right in!
Told from multiple pov by Jane and Frankie.
Jane, Sophie, Hils and Kath have been buddies for years until Sophie brings a 5th woman to the group, Lexie. Right from the start Jane and Lexie butt heads and have she said/she said shenanigans going on. This puts Jane and Sophie's BFFness on the rocks.
Jane and her husband, Frankie, are unable to have children, so when Sophie and Lexie announce they're pregnant, Jane can't help to feel a wee bit sad. Bring on the baby shower and tensions rise and secrets and lies are revealed.
Cheers, Mate, to the bloody brilliant British lingo.
It was a fast paced, psychological thrilling ride and I'll be sure to read her work again.

This novel exactly fits the bill if you are looking for an entertaining thriller. This story would make a perfect Netflix movie.
The story revolves around Jane and her friendships. The dynamics of her friends are at a risk when a new friend joins her group. How are friendships measured? How much do we know a person even if we call them as our friend? Are friendships really measured on the give and take of gifts? Are we always in search of that picture perfect life to post on social media? The author dwells into these subjects and feelings for Jane, Frankie and Gareth comes naturally.
Who, why and how are not too hard to really predict but even after knowing that this book is hard to put down.
The book dives into really tough subjects like fertility, rape, PTSD and toxic friendships so a caution.

Oh, the drama, drama, drama.
Wasn't a fan of the overly casual prose, even outside of dialogue. "Pass-agg, aggro, obvs"
That twist was extraordinary though.

I’ve introduced a new points system for my reads - right now it’s all about the distraction value. Top marks for any book that stops me thinking about the news headlines!
The Baby Shower gets top marks for distraction! The film I have watched most is Bridesmaids …it makes me laugh every time and I enjoy the whole dynamic between Annie, Lilian and Helen and to start with The Baby Shower had similar vibes. A close group of friends is threatened by a new arrival - she’s only been here five minutes but already she’s a bestie and she’s throwing the most extravagant baby shower for Sophie. Jane has had a terrible childhood, is married to the love of her life but they can’t conceive and now she’s watching her best friend succumb to the wiles of Lexie..is it only her best friend she will lose?
Oh my goodness, I have rarely hated a character so much ..Lexie got completely under my skin and she makes Helen look a total lightweight! From the start it’s absolutely clear she doesn’t like Jane - and I really did! - and she’s clearly plotting. I couldn’t believe the vacuousness of Sophie - why wasn’t she seeing behind the act!
I loved the relationship between Frankie and Jane - it was so down to earth and supportive and loving. They are navigating themselves through a world of baby showers and babies - a world that has been denied them…
I had to know what Sophie was up to, I had to know Jane and Frankie would be ok ..wouldn’t they? Highly recommend for total distraction!
