Didn't really enjoy it. Problems solved too easily; kept on "seeing" the author writing it rather than being caught up in the story. Also, I despise cliffhangers.

This book is about two American teenagers that fall into another world through strange means, meet each other in a random place, become involved in the drama of people trying to overthrow an evil emperor, go on a quest to find the syllables of an Adamic word, betrayals, friendships and craziness in between. The ending was.....lame in the sense that you have to read the next book to see the ending. You leave all the people in completely wandering, unending storylines and the book should have an ending feeling if you want someone to recommend the book. You can have a twist but not leave a person in an unending world of not knowing anything and leaving nothing finished.

The book started off really promising with a great protagonist and a quirky concept. As it went though, it became a bit too repetitive with each chapter feeling very episodic. Also, I’m actually quite confused at whether this book counts as Middle Grade or Young Adult because the more advance language and the depictions are far more mature than I expected. Overall, it was still a fun read and I’m definitely planning on reading the rest of the trilogy soon.

3.5 stars. Rated lower because it's a little younger than what I'd normally read, but for a book I found at the dump, pretty good! I'll be finishing the series. For 13yr olds the main characters are pretty mature and maybe smarter than me. A bit fantastical and crazy at times, but it seemed to work!
