Really wanted to like this book, but it was really boring. I liked the relationships, it literally nothing happened.

This book was quite literally one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced. I’m struggling to find the words to describe the magic of Count Rostov and his life within the Metropol Hotel.

If you're expecting action from every book you read, this novel isn't for you. "A Gentleman in Moscow" is the definition of slow burn. I'm not completely sure why I even picked up this novel in the first place (since I've in the past found books boring because of "lack of plot"). But, Towles created such a wonderfully genuine main character in Count Alexander Rostov and the many people within in the Metropol Hotel who fill his house arrest years with life and purpose.

In all honesty, this book couldn't have come at a better time for me--during quarantine. The overarching theme of the novel is making the best of one's circumstances and not letting one's circumstances make the best of us. Though this may not always be applicable in everyone's lives, it fits so perfectly when we're all collectively stuck in our homes now.

I get teary-eyed thinking about this novel. I genuinely hope anyone who reads this one as well allows it to take over their lives as they read it and grab hold of the parts of their soul they need it to.

I loved loved loved this book.   I cannot say enough good things.  Exactly the kind of novel I love to read.  Smart, thought provoking, insightful, historical, with fantastic characters throughout.  And exquisite writing.  A masterpiece.
