With a series in its 69th issue (up to this deluxe edition), one might expect the characters to have become trite, flat or even caricatures of their former selves -- goodness knows that this is often what happens to even the best written TV shows -- but Fables appears to be eluding that fate thus far. In fact, its characters are only getting more diverse and interesting.
Take Prince Charming. The former playboy has actually developed into a competent, strong leader, and a character that I actually kind of like now. This is not something I would have predicted when we first met him. I digress, though, as Charming is not the hero of this arc.
Introduced as a lowly, bumbling janitor, this deluxe edition shows us the real man behind the frog cap, as Ambrose, aka Fly, becomes the leader he was destined to be. This fable reintroduces some lost characters while allowing Fly to shine. It's an enjoyable adventure that manages to be a character showcase while progressing Fables main story arc of the war with the Adversary. Well done.

Least favorite of the series, pacing was off big time and things just seemed too convenient. Probably closer to 3.5 or 3.75 but I think 4 is too generous

An absolutely beautiful and epic story in the Fables universe, bringing background character Flycatcher into his own with a noble and virtuous quest.

Fly's story was very interesting and Blue is one of my new favorite characters.

Everything about this book was a delight. I've always been fond of Flycatcher, and this book just made me love him so much more. Tensions are building (again), and I'm really wishing I didn't have to work today so I could just dive right into #9!
