Although I'm still thoroughly enjoying my reread of this series, I've come to realize the author tries to jam too much into one book for my taste.

As usual, I want to try to leave this review spoiler free. For that reason, some of this may sound cryptic. Eve had quite a huge personal revelation in the beginning half of this book. It was used as a tool to explain why her usually sharp mind missed some little details in her case, but wasn't really mentioned much more. I know what was revealed is extremely important to help Rourke and the reader really understand Eve. Yet I also feel there were so many other things going on (the wedding, her investigation, Mavis) that, by the time I got to the end of the book, I almost forgot this very important thing was revealed. That bothers me.

I still love these books and will still continue the series, I just feel this one was a little too much information overload.

Update 9/7/24 after re-reading via audiobook:
I'm not sure what the difference was this time around, but I didn't have that same feeling of the story being too much this time around. There is a lot that happens and I still wish more had been made of Eve's revelation, but being as I'm at the point that I know there are a LOT more books in this series it didn't bother me. Yet I'm not changing my 3-star rating because I felt the pacing was off and certain aspects of the story were dragged out for too long.

I once again really enjoyed the narration by Cristine McMurdo Wallis. She inflects her voice enough for characters to be distinct without distracting from the story.

I have previously read this book in paperback, below is the review I wrote for that edition.

In this third installment of the In Death series Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces two stressful situations, her upcoming wedding and her best friend being the main suspect in a brutal murder.

The book begins with Eve trying to organise her wedding dress on her day off... Being Eve, it is not a simple shopping trip!

But her first case is the death of a confidential informant known as Boomer. Eve asks for Officer Peabody to be assigned as her aide for the case, so this is their first case working together.

The case involves drugs, so a Lieutenant from the Illegals division becomes involved in the investigation too.

Eve also continues to have nightmares, and finally remembers what happened before she was found as a child with a broken arm and no memory.

A lot of growth in relationships between characters in this book.
