4.67 "Arrest me in the morning" stars

Because why not get specific? If I want to be able to review and distinguish all 40+ books in the series, I may as well rate them uniquely.

So far, Glory In Death is my favorite book of the series. The reason is simple: Eve's personal life was tightly interwoven with the case.

I'm not going to say more lest I spoil something. Only maybe that, even though I'd lightly suspected the person who eventually turned out to be the murderer, it was still a surprise. Conversely to "Immortal In Death" (book two) there weren't as many suspects, which heightened the frustration since Eve was hoping for more to turn out, but also made it more interesting, IMO, because I was always shifting between: "It must be him... no, definitely her... maybe they did it together?"

Her relationship with Roarke keeps on growing and, in this installment, I'd say we see a lighter aspect of it. There isn't major angst concerning their relationship, but some of their scenes were hilarious, swoony and downright romantic. That man is pure gold! First and foremost, he holds dear Eve's well-being, even when she doesn't give a flying crap about it.

“I doubt this will diminish your authority,” he murmured, then pressed his lips softly to hers. “I love you.”
“Yeah, well.” She cleared her throat. “Okay.”
“Poetry.”

I love their dynamics because even though Eve loves Roarke, she has issues expressing it and coming to terms with the fact that someone like him could love her back. Roarke is the main chaser in the relationship, and, with her doubts and his certainty, they remind me a lot of Cat and Bones from the Night Huntress series.

“Sorry I blubbered on you.”
“I’m always available for blubbering.” He came toward her with a steaming omelette and a cup. He sat down, stared into her swollen, exhausted eyes. “I adore you.”
She flushed. It seemed he was the only one who could bring embarrassed color to her cheeks. “You’re trying to distract me.” She took the plate and a fork. “That kind of stuff always does, and I can never get my tongue around what I should say back.” She sampled the eggs. “Maybe something like you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”
“That’ll do.”

There's instead a major turning point in Eve's life, and although I would have expected it to be revealed further in the series, to see how Roarke stood by her side and fought for their happiness made me want to slow clap and to kiss him. Well, everything he does makes me want to smooch him but that scene particularly so.

"I won’t let you go, Eve. If you didn’t love me or want me or need me, I would have to. But you do love me and want me. And though you still have difficulty with the concept, you need me.”

It's literally been years since I last read this series, but I was reminded of it again by watching these books come often across the circulation desk at the library. While I found myself wishing I remembered a few of the details from previous books referenced, it wasn't too hard to pick up where I left off. And it was lovely to discover that the character of Eve Dallas -- strong, smart, prickly, dedicated -- could still delight and inspire me. Although I like the undercurrent of her romance with Roarke in this series, I did find myself questioning the healthiness of their relationship, as he repeatedly did things she expressly told him not to do under the paternalistic guise of "taking care of" her. But she still never comes across as dependent, and I like that the series focuses on her career and not her relationships.

Still, the characters and the relationships between them remain the strong point in this series. While it was nice to "see" my old favorites again, I'm also intrigued by the characters that are introduced as one-time stars, those that figure into the murder mystery. In this case, a famous model with links to an illegal, fatal, "fountain-of-youth" type drug has been murdered, Eve's best friend has been framed, and finding the true killer is a matter of personal and professional necessity as Eve works to clear her friend's name.

Unfortunately, I was able to zero in on the killer before Eve was, which is the second time I've "discovered" the true killer in this series. I remember the first book I read, "Purity in Death," totally surprised me with who the true killer was. I wonder if that's because it's later in the series and Robb had become better at not showing her hand, or whether it was just because I hadn't yet become familiar with the formula and conventions of mysteries and this series in particular. I'll continue to read for the characters, and keep running notes of how often I crack the case in advance.

Really getting into this series, though I don't know how the writer can keep it fresh for the 40 or so books that are in this series. I'll just have to keep reading to find out.

Another fun romp in the In Death series.

It's also another reread, though I missed reporting it the first time.

Yay! Eve and Rourke got married!

But will there ever be a book when Eve actually captures her suspect on her own without them coming forward or kidnapping her and revealing themselves? I love Eve, but I kept being told she's a good cop, not actually shown.

I thought it was Paul, and I'm mad I was wrong about it. Great read, surprised by the whodunit ending. Poor Jerry

Another great book in the series. This is my favourite book so far.

Eve is becoming even more likeable the more we learn about her, I especially love how strong and resilient she is while she is also learning how to be more open and rely on others.

The romance with Roarke is just getting better and better, I loved seeing them work together.

The mystery was very well build and it kept me interesting to the end.

I will definitely read more books from this series.
