looking beyond the occasionally millennial writing style i appreciate this and dial a for aunties for celebrating cultures i grew up with too, even if a little differently. meddy’s a great brain to live in when we’re parsing out the complicated relationship between an asian american woman and her mother (on a very high level - this was never gonna be a deep dive into that wasp nest). granted, the backdrop of that familial relationship tended to involve a lot of potential corpses, but you do what you gotta do to find common ground with your mother yknow

i liked this book for the exploration of the asian diaspora as the author discusses in her foreword - given that this was a light hearted fiction story i didn’t expect a great deal of depth and came out feeling like i’d managed my expectations well. the difficulties and differences of asian experiences that sutanto wanted to touch on were certainly present and rarely bogged the story down - if looking for something deeper regarding those experiences this wasn’t the book for it

i did think meddy’s ramble about realizing she and her mother and aunts were just like each other and not wildly different as she always thought was…lacking nuance? in a way? it was a little self satisfying and read like a college essay of discovering the self and ties with family. nevertheless it was a needed sentiment so i liked it

oh oh and this part is totally not a strike against the book but it is a strike against straight ppl like tell me why meddy is Peak straight millennial woman i gag what do u mean she objectifies her husband and calls him hubby and he calls her wifey, every time she looks at her fiance/husband she has to describe how hot he is in detail like this isn’t even a romance book why are we doing all this 😭 i say gag not in a “i’m obsessed and can’t handle it” way i say it in a “i am so deeply unhappy that my eyes had to engage with these words in that specific order and context.” nevertheless meddy’s like at least a little self aware which makes it a smidgeon 🤏🏼🤏🏼 more bearable and maybe it’s just me being anti-men i just don’t think he needed all that lmfao

overall it was a fun read 🤸‍♀️

In the Author's Note of this book Sutanto talked about how she wanted to tackle the subject of the Asian diaspora. To illustrate how truly different and unique each family experience can be. "

Meddy and her aunties kept me laughing throughout this book, just as they did in Dial A for Aunties. The premise of this book was wild, and the story was definitely full of antics. At times, the antics got somewhat repetitive and the twists were a bit obvious, but it was a fun ride. I appreciated the author’s note about her goal for the book at the beginning, but without that context I’m not sure I would’ve picked up on what she intended. I did appreciate the growth of the relationship between Meddy and her aunts/ma and the realization she comes to at the end. Overall, a fun time!
