Lately, it's hard for me to convey what my thoughts are about a book, particularly those that surprise me and don't let me go. This is one of them.
“There's always another secret.' -Kelsier”
A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields.
But now a troublemaker has arrived and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.
“I'm not really sure why. But... do you stop loving someone just because they betray you? I don't think so. That's what makes the betrayal hurt so much - pain, frustration, anger... and I still loved her. I still do.”
In the first 100 pages, there was a lot of information about the magical system and world-building. So I was overwhelmed by so much information that my brain could not capture. But once I organized my thoughts and left the panic behind, things cleared up and, I was able to concentrate more on the storyline and the characters.
“Our belief is often strongest when it should be weakest. That is the nature of hope.”
The story is compelling, intriguing, and exciting. I couldn't help but think of the characters, the story, and the setbacks that might be on display for this group of thieves. The magic system is so well thought out and composed. It's amazing and unique. I loved!!!
“I am the one thing you can never kill. I am Hope.”
All I'm going to say about characters is that they're endearing. I'm not going to say anything else because it is difficult for me to move on after the hard blow that was reading the last part of the story and, I think I am in denial.
“Every action we take has consequences, Vin," Kelsier said. "I've found that in both Allomancy and life, the person who can best judge the consequences of their actions will be the most successful.”
This is my first experience with Sanderson, and I was scared that his handwriting wasn't to my liking. However, it was not the case, its characters are profound and well developed. I think he is a writer who reflects much when he writes and shows in the development of his work. At some point next year, I will begin the second book. For the moment, I'm pleased to have read this one.
