Another good Jane Harper novel,
but still not The Dry.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I really struggled with these characters... Neither Sean nor Ash were distinctive enough for me to remember which one was whom, and their names had enough similarities (one syllable, not overly common, prominent 'sh' sound) that I sort of just lumped them together as one in my head.

I did appreciate the way that Harper didn't leave discoveries/revelations/aha moments (on Keiran's behalf) hanging for long without sharing the new info with the reader. Turns out I'm also too old and grumpy for much sustained suspense any more!

3.5 stars - not as quick a read as Harper’s other books. I enjoyed the small town coastal Australian setting.

Read in one day! This book was a great mystery that had small town secrets and tense family drama all woven together. I enjoyed how Kieran was a great father and boyfriend to Mia, and how that was constant in the book.
The book tackled the issues of blame, grief, and guilt head on. When you deal with those things, that’s when your true self comes out.
One hole I found in the plot is after Mia says, “Don’t leave me alone with your father again”, the very next day she is left alone again with him while Kieran and his mother go diving. Nothing is mentioned about it and that story line was never brought up again.
All in all, I enjoyed this book! This was my first of Harper’s books, but I can see myself picking another one of hers up very soon!

i do NOT recommend the audiobook for this one. I think i would have enjoyed it more if i read it myself but the narrator’s reading was bad, like a textbook. ruined it for me.

I don't know what's up with me but most of the thrillers I've read the last couple weeks have been so disappointing. This one is just... confusing 🤔 there was a lot of information being thrown out and lots of twists towards the end, but I'm still left wondering what in the world. It's not all bad because the setting up of the mystery and the setting of the story are great, but that's the only positives for me. Everything happened so painfully slow.
