(This is the first Stephen King book I have read!)

This is a book that can get repetitive at points for sure, BUT, its one of the handful of pieces of fiction that approach anywhere near to the sweaty and bleak quality of a film like "The Texas chainsaw massacre" (1974) and that is an achievement that cannot be understated!

Very few pieces of dark/dystopian fiction that set out to be as bleak as possible can escape the trap of falling into "edgelord" territory but this is one that I feel like for the most part does not fall into that trap and is incredibly effective at what it sets out to do!

Part of me is shocked this is one of the few King books that hasn't been adapted to film or tv but I also understand that it would prove to be an interesting challenge if one tried to adapt it to say the least given the premise of the book!

I would imagine that if and when it is adapted, the ages of the 100 teenage characters who take part in the grueling titular "long walk" televised death game will be aged up slightly to avoid blow back from anti-media violence types, but then again we are living in a post "hunger games" and "battle royale" world so who knows!

The book is quite something though and I am glad I read it as my first King!
