for what is essentially a children’s story, the amount of fighting and drama and sadness was unexpected. a big scale adventure story of displacement and fighting back for what is yours. truly remarkable. throughly enjoyed this book.
In the future we’ll cry a lot is my take on this feminist take on this children’s classic. We shall cry, I should say to barrow the language of the story, when we realize how we’ve let children down just as we cry at how we were let down ourselves. To hear the stories of the many adventures of lady toad is to understand how often-if not always-girls and women are left in the dust in this type of story telling. I mean as they are not represented in stories of adventure all they are alienated from them and left to do is to admire the boys engaged in it. Now I wanna see all the classics revisited in this manner. Revise the genders in Jane Eyre, the Great Gatsby, all female Huckleberry Finn!

A very cute book. I'm honestly surprised by just how emotionally manipulative a toad can be... Even I almost fell for it lmao

This book is fairly sexist and classist, but given that it was written by a middle/upper class man in 1908 I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that.
I can see why this book became a classic, but I didn't really love it myself. It was a bit weird and quite disjointed.
