Meant to read the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

The only redeeming aspect of this book is its likely unintentional critique of how scientific culture has often tacitly encouraged both solitary and sensational discoveries over more communal work and work that is less thrilling (Edison and the "dire wolves" are coming to mind).

It's fine, and very influential, and there's a good bit of interest and humor when the titular villain finds himself wandering the countryside with a very ordinary fellow who just wants to avoid trouble.

Wow, this must’ve been totally bonkers when it was first released. I really liked that it starts somewhat normal - our invisible man griffin is already invisible and is desperately seeking a cure it would seem. Slowly but surely he begins realizing the difficulties of being invisible and then the darker advantages it offers. There’s very vivid descriptions of the invisible nature of Griffin and a somehow believable explanation for how he did it. The ending is really my favorite because, to me, it shows several things. First Griffin becomes more selfish as he thinks of himself as special and powerful and enabled to do whatever he wants. But at the end, he cries for mercy and the people murder him. It seems to show that he wasn’t special in his descent into selfishness and propensities to do evil - that’s something everyone is capable of, as shown by the entire town. It is easy to do evil if unseen, and it is easy to evil to the unseen.
