Does it Hurt?
H.D Carlton

Firstly the dedication 🤣🤣🤣 crack up!

Secondly, ahhhh.... all kinds of fucked up this one was, honestly.
I was expecting a pretty wild read after reading Haunting & Hunting Adeline. But I liked those way better.
This was predictable. I liked the book, but easily could have just not read it.

BUT! Definitely gave the palette cleanser I was after between fantasy series, so served its purpose for me 🤣

Definitely check the trigger warnings. But as per usual for this writer, it seems the bad guys tend to get what's coming to them! So I mean that gives me peace reading this genre but may not be the same for others. Proceed with caution!

H.D. Carlton knows how to write a powerful and brave FMC with horrific history. Her MMC are also fascinating…
This book, the story of Sawyer and Enzo’s story is definitely one of my favorites of this year.
It is spicy (really really really), dark and also very tense.

I read the cat and mouse duet a few months ago and had to read this one too. However, After reading some of the other reviews it seems I’m part of a small group who actually liked this book.

‼️‼️<spoiler >Sawyers past which is made apparent right off (most of it anyway😏) makes it pretty easy to see why she was so willing to give it up behind a waterfall with a guy she just met at a bar 10% of the way in.
‼️‼️

The phrases “Bella” & “Bella ladre” were used so much, however it being Enzo’s pet name for her it makes sense. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and you could feel the shift when they really began to care for each other. That boat scene will probably live in my head rent free for a while because sharks and I do not mix. So I just couldn’t imagine! The entire lighthouse escapade had my mind racing, though parts of it were kinda obvious but there was at least 2 points I was quite literally saying what the fuck?! There were a lot of 🌶️🌶️ scenes in this one as well, some of them left me reeling and speechless. Some of the ending I felt like it was rushed, and kinda wanted to see an alternate ending especially when getting off the island. All in all though I would recommend this to friends with similar reading interests. I did enjoy the book and will continue to read others by her.

Honestly I feel like H.D Carlton claims “dark romance” when she’s really just trying to pack as much trauma into a book as possible. There is relatively no plot and at the end of the book you question why you read it to begin with.
